'Sox seemed to have given up a lot of promising talent for Bedard

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/

Giving up such a verstatile young player as Yamaco Navarro for Aviles did not make sense to me either.  But, hopefully, I'm wrong on both trades.

'Sox take 2 of 3 from the Brew Crew

Nice pounding of their ace today -- he threw over 40 pitches in the first inning.  Wake continues to fill in nicely as the # 5 starter and may move up with the DL-addition of Bucholz.  On the latter, I applaud this move of precaution rather than risking a more serious injury.  The DL also has Craw-fish and Jed-low.  Fortunately, those injuries do not seem serious though I feel for Jed-low.  Seems that the injury bug keeps biting him. I saw that fender-bender he had with Craw-fish which resulted in Jed-low's initial injury.  It could have been avoided with a little more communications in the OF.  Easy for me to say from the comfort of my living room couch.

Nice opportunity for Reddick and LHP Andrew Miller to step.  I suppose that Aceves will be the 4th or 5th starter now until Buchholz gets back.

Perhaps 'Sox can keep all 3 on the DL until after the All-Star break and ensure that they are fresh, healthy, and ready for the 2nd half.

Beckett and Youk deliver

Beckett was locked in a classic pitching duel.  'Sox had runners at the corners after Joe Maddon had A-Gonz walked intentionally.  Youk delivered a 3-run HR which is all Beckett needed.  He is certainly back and his ERA is below 2.00.  Welcome back, Josh!

Jeter to the DL

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110614&content_id=20465992&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

The aging and hurting Yankees continue to mount up injuries much like our 2010 'Sox.  The Celtic Great Bill Russell once spoke of injuries in the context of the NBA with the the observation that "injuries are just as much part of the game as free throws".  Not sure I agree completely with that view though it bespeaks the need for a deep bench in any sport.  However, there seems to be a bit of luck at times in staying away from the serious injuries.  Injuries, like the proverbial ball/puck are just a matter of inches and in some cases centimeters.

Minor players. One headed back to the Minors.

Here is an article about players, in their late 20's, who have helped the 'Sox this season though without the fame and fortune. Serves as a reminder that not all big league players make the big bucks and face daily struggles like the rest of us.

A short break in the action

'Sox travel south to face the Devil Rays.  Sure hope the one day respite does not cool down their blazing hot bats.  Craw-fish returns to his previous home.

One of my colleagues today pointed out that the great Carl Yastremski's grandson, who plays for Vanderbilt, is in the college baseball playoffs.  Yaz continues to be held in high regard for his many accomplishments while playing his entire career for the RedSox.  Most notably, in 1967 he won the AL MVP Award and the Triple Crown.  He won three batting titles, usually led the league in assists for an OF, and several Gold Gloves.  He was the maestro of playing the Green Monster, often decoying hitters into thinking that the high fly was going over the Monster only to turn at the last second to play the carom off the wall and hold the runner to a long single.

It was not until years later that I realized Yaz hat hit over .500 in the month of September '67 and practically carried the 'Sox to their first AL Pennant since 1946.  Many of those hits were in the clutch.  In watching the final 2 games of '67 in which the 'Sox faced the Minnesota Twins, my father and brother would keep count as to how many more hitters before Yaz came back up to bat.   He did not disappoint.

We could get used to this...

They outscored the Yankees 25-13; the Blue Jays 35-6.  Each time I checked the scores this weekend, our 'Sox were up by big double-digit leads.  In reality, we know that this will not last indefinitely, but it sure is fun seeing them all come together.  Now, they head down to face the Devil Rays.

Living up to pre-season billing (finally)

Today, our 'Sox sit atop their division with a 2-game lead over the Yankees.  Their potent lineup enables them to score runs in bunches.  We are seeing this potency despite Pedey nursing a sore knee, Craw-fish hovering around .240, Youk not hitting his stride yet, and Drew struggling at the plate.

So, what gives?  The return of Ells, the re-emergence of Big Papi, and A-Gonz's steady presence as a patient hitter who has already knocked in 58 runs.

On the pitching front, we have seen the much-welcomed return of Beckett to complement Lester and Buchhholz.  But wait, there's more.  Lackey has pitched better in his last 2 starts and the # 5 starter role has been filled nicley by Wake and Aceves.

The beat goes on....

'Sox take 1st game of weekend series against the Blue Jays.  Top 3 hitters in the lineup did most of the damage.  Nice outing from Buchholz.  A-Gonz continues his RBI production, 2 more making it 57 for the season.

A clean sweep!

Not only did the 'Sox sweep the Yankees in their own house, they did so in a convincing manner outscoring them 25-13 over 3 games.

Recognzing that we are not even 1/2 way through this long season, it is always nice to sweep the Yankees.  Beckett continues to be his old, dominant self.

Good news yesterday on Pedey that he will not require knee surgery.

Nice win over the Yanks...

Solid hitting and good outing from Lester results in a nice "W" over the Yankees.  Pap gave up a run but still managed to record his 200th career save.

Wake goes for the 'Sox tonight.

MRI for Jed

Sure hope that nothing is seriously wrong with Jed. He gave a much needed boost to a sputtering 'Sox offense earlier in the season. I know that many in Red Sox Nation would love to see him stay healthy and play to his potential. As a switch hitter, with some pop, who can multiple infield positions, he is an important part of this team.

Scutaro back, Atchison sent down (again)

Why Scotty?  He has been very effective in relief.  I know, he has minor league options left, etc.  It's a numbers game, all that stuff.  Hopefully, he will be back up soon.

Ebb and Flow

After getting swept by Ozzie's Chisox, our 'Sox swept the A's.  A colleauge at work and 'Sox fan commented that this could be a team of streaks.  Now, it is on to the Bronx for another series with the Yankees who continue to either cling to or hover near the divison's top.  Where now is all the talk of the aging Yankee players?  Perhaps that age may manifest itself during the season's stretch.  We'll see.

For the 2nd straight week, a 'Sox player is named AL player of the week.  This week:  Big Papi.  Seems to me that he is out to prove something besides this being his contract walk year.

A-Gonz continues to play and hit steadily.

Highs and lows, ups and downs

They took 3 of 4 from the Tigers, had been sweeping others series, and catapulted into first place.  Now, they have hit a 3-game skid onl fall out of first place.  Aceves struggled mightily but our 'Sox did not quit.  They mounted a nice comeback from a 10-1 deficit.

Time for them to reach deep down and take this final game from the ChiSox.

Big Papi of old?

He came through as a PH and hit the game-winning HR - nice job, Big Papi!  He leads the team in HRs and is making a strong case for a contract extension.  But, we have a long way to go and his $12M contract is a bit hefty for a DH these days.

'Sox go for sweep tonight.  Worst case, they end up taking 3 of 4 in Detroit.

'Sox stay hot

They continue to hit and pitch well.  The ageless Wake continues to be the ultimate safety valve, stepping up when and where needed.  Ells is not only hitting well but with power.  Combined with his 18 SB so far, he is quickly becoming the quintessetial leadoff man.  Theo may have to consider locking him up in a deal similar to what he did for Pedey, Youk, and Lester - all 3 were signed to long-term deals prior to arbitration eligibility.

Speaking of SBs, Ells, Pedey, and Craw-fish have 35 combined thus far.  I recall the days in which the 'Sox might steal 35 all season.  It is such a welcome sight to see such speed in the lineup.

Craw-fish continues to put his horrendous start being him.

Sox finally have hit on the right formula - The Boston Globe

The link below contains nice thumbnails on how key 'Sox players have contributed to this turnaround. They seem to have hit their stride, found the groove -- all the cliches.

Craw-fish season?

Could Craw-fish have turned the corner for the season?  Let's hope that today's 4 for 4 showing will infuse him with confidence and comfort.

Have you all noticed that Salty is batting .240 now?  I watched him behind the plate the other night and he seems quite comfortable in catching Wake.   He is hitting for power lately.  Maybe he truly was a diamond in the rough?

Can't say enough about the job that Scott Achison is doing in relief since being called up from Pawtuckett.  When Jenks comes off the DL, I hope they send down Morales or Albers, recognizing that they both could be out of options and would have to clear waivers.   Of course, Bowden could be sent back down, too.

In short, Theo, keep Achison in Boston.

Injury bug fells Drew again

Fortunately, we have Cam and, in a pinch, Josh Reddick at Pawtucket to play RF. Rumor has it that Dice-K may need the Tommy John procedure? If so, I feel better knowing that Wake can step up to fill that slot in the starting rotation.

Updates on Youkilis and Drew - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Beckett is back

On Monday night, Buchholz had a solid outing.  Last night, Beckett held Cleveland to 1-run and lowered his ERA to 1.69.  In this day and age, that kind of ERA is outstanding.

Nice contribution from 'Tek.  A-Gonz continues to be a hitting machine.

I just keep wondering when Craw-fish will come to life.

Tough way to lose

When it comes to losing games, I would prefer getting blown out rather than losing late in the game.  Such was the case last night.  Tough loss.

I am beginning to believe that Tito is overworking Bard.  He is a power pitcher who throws in the high 90's.

Monday, May 23, 2011

"Wake" up call?

With the way Wake pitched last night, I can't help but think that they need to get him into the starting rotation more.  He is such a team guy who has done everything his managers have asked of him since signing a minor league deal with the 'Sox in 1995.  Even then, he was a godsend given how both Clemens and Sele were on the DL for a good portion of that season.

Nice way for the 'Sox to take the weekend series against the Cubs.  Sorry to see the Byrd beaning.  Hope that he recovers fully and quickly.

'Sox bats have come to life with the exception of Craw-fish.  Salty seems to be gaining greater confidence all the time.  I was too quick to give up on him!

Where was Bard last night?

As much I would have like to have seen the Bard-Pap combo preserve a 3-1 lead last night, this article reminds of how concerned many were last year of his being over-used.

The wheels came off quickly in 8th inning.

Red Sox transactions in the last 24 hours - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

More on the roster moves. Okey was designated for assignment, too, along with Nava.

Red Sox transactions in the last 24 hours - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

'Sox moves

Several roster moves today.  The one that really caught my eye was leaving Daniel Nava off of the 40-man roster.  He has to clear waivers before making his way back to AAA.   He will always hold sentimental feelings for hitting a grand slam in his first game with the 'Sox.  Regardless of what happens to Daniel, I wish him the best.  Perhaps he can hook up with a team, get steady playing time, and really blossom into an everyday player.

Another walkoff win

Courtesy of Craw-fish.  Though the Bard-Pap closing combo struggled, Craw-fish came through with the game winning RBI.

'Sox are now winning consistently and in so doing, the RedSox.com cites the creation of a team "identity".

'Sox conclude sweep of the Tigers.  Now, the Cubs come into town for a weekend, throwback series.

Was our "Southpaw" at Fenway tonight?

Unlikely heroes

They both have struggled all season.  They both are hitting around .200.  However, tonight both Craw-fish and Salty came through big.

Craw-fish drew a 2-out walk and scored on Salty's "Wall Ball" 2-bagger.  Craw-fish was off at the crack of the bat and never hesitated.  He scored easily from first -- the game's only run.  Nice to have that kind of speed on the basepaths.  BB is just as good as a single in my book.

Uncharacteristically, Leyland erred by keeping in his lefty to face Salty.

I feel very happy for the both of them -- Salty and Crawfish.  This could help with their self-confidence.

Another solid outing from Buchholz who continuing to be able to work out of trouble.

Rich Hill is pitching well

Thanks to that great pitching coach, now Jays manager John Farrell, Hill changed to a 3/4 to sidearm delivery.  He has been effective so far while at MLB level.  As posted previously, a team can never have enough pitching.  It is a great resource to have a farm system stocked with talent to draw from.

Dice-K to DL; Aceves in Red Sox rotation - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Tonight's rainout at Fenway v. O's has mixed blessings. Extra day for pitchers on DL to get healthy (Lackey and Dice-K). However, 'Sox were hitting their stride. The walkoff win against those O's could be one of those moments when a team can look back and cite it as a turning point in the season.

'Sox have to juggle their starting rotation. Thank goodness for having Wake on staff. Will be interesting to see how Aceves does in a start. Bowden was recalled to take his place in the bullpen. Not sure how Felix D. is doing in AAA. I checked on his status and found this from NESN:

Could we see Felix Doubront up at some point if John Lackey or Daisuke Matsuzaka do not pick it up? And would they just put one of them on the disabled list to make room for Felix? Also, is it confirmed that Felix is on the DL in the minors now?
-- Cody Bedell

Hi Cody, you answered one of your questions already. Doubront is on the DL with a strained groin, so he was not an immediate option when Lackey was placed on the DL on Monday. Tim Wakefield will probably take Lackey's spot in the rotation.

As for Doubront's status going forward, he is a great replacement option when healthy. The problem is, he has had loads of physical issues. You might recall that Doubront was shut down near the end of 2010 with shoulder problems, and then missed most of spring training with elbow tightness. Now the groin issue. He is young and talented and could very well see some action in the majors this year, so long as he maintains some degree of health.

It goes to show that a team can never have enough pitching. Plus, Jenks and Wheeler on the DL.

Dice-K to DL; Aceves in Red Sox rotation - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Yo, Adrian!

Was the headline in this morning's RedSox.com.  Down 6-0, the 'Sox stunned the dreaded O's by taking a walkoff double from A-Gonz to victory.  Nice comeback!

Aceves pitched 3 solid inning as he and Achison relieved a struggling Dice-K.

Two major accomplishments

With last night's win in the Bronx, our 'Sox swept the Yankees (improving to 5-1 against them this year) and finally reached .500.  Hard to imagine that I would be so excited about them hitting .500 but after the tough start, I feel that they finally made it.  The have at least weathered the storm and now seem to be putting it together.

'Sox brought out the big bats this weekend and had solid pitching from Buccholz and Beckett (the Killer B's) and Lester toughed it out last night.

Need for Dice-K and Lackey to step up and pitch well.  Hopefully, the extra time spent with Lackey with his mechanics will help -- we'll see.

Now, let's sweep the O's and keep the winning streak going!

'Sox take the first game

Another solid performance from Buchholz coupled with support from Youk and A-Gonz.  Bard and Pap each gave up a run but 'Sox held on.  A-Gonz seems to be hitting a nice stride.  He is hitting with power to both LF and RF.

Craw-fish continues to struggle but he is now over the Mendoza line.

Reports/rumors reveal that 'Sox are interested trying to lure one of the Molina brothers out of retirement.

7-3 Jays

Lackey must be on the mound.  Geez, is this guy ever going to earn his big guaranteed salary?

So far this season, it clearly has been one of two games forward and three games back -- no consistency.  Right when they seem to be getting it going, they hit a 2-3 game slide.

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Okey and Craw-fish come through

Despite not being able to hold a slim 1-run lead and reward Beckett with a "W", Okey pitched well and Craw-fish drove in the winning run.  Nice way to win.  Plus, 'Sox are now 3 GB.

Apparently, last night's ump called Aceves for two balks during this series.  Last night's call pushed the runner into scoring postion.

Beckett seems to be back.

Monday, May 9, 2011

Wasted effort

Beckett seems to be back.  Pap had the 3rd out down 0-2 and gave up the game-tying hit.  Too bad that Beckett's fine effort could not be saved by Pap.   When you have the tying run at second and the hitter down 0-2, time to apply the knockout punch.

Time to re-stock the farm system

Having traded 3  top prospects for A-Gonz, Theo must restock the system with solid prospects.  The list of picks who have made it to the Majors is quite impressive.  Theo seems to have the picks to make an important re-stocking step.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2011/05/epstein_on_the_2.html

Are we starting to see consistency?

Saturday saw a gutsy performance from Buchholz, re-entering the game despite a several hour rain delay.  Sunday, Dice-K had a good performance.  I see that A-Gonz is starting to hit to the Green Monster much like the way that antother lefty hitter by the name of Fred Lynn used to.  Craw-fish is beginning to create some distance from the Mendoza line.

Jenks and Wheeler to the DL as well as Scutaro.  Will be interesting to see how Tito inserts SS-in waiting Iglesias into the lineup.

Rich Hill and Albers pitched well over the weekend.

Maybe it is beginning to come together?

Back in the cellar (again)

So far this season, the 'Sox have had stops and starts.  Right when we think that they are getting into gear, they hit a rough patch.  They have not been able, yet, to achieve any consistency.  It has been a bit frustrating to see them so struggle so much given the talent that they have.

Seeing Jenks and Wheeler go to the DL so early in the season is a concern.  More of a concern has been their performance so far.

I wonder when this team will hit its stride for 2011?

Kalish confirms report on his injury - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

This would really be a tough break for this promising young player. With both Cameron and Drew in their walk years, 2012 would have been a great opportunity for him. Let's not forget Josh Reddick who has fallen down the prospect chart but still has good potential.

Kalish confirms report on his injury - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Inching toward .500

I will admit to having been a bit nervous as the 'Sox starting pitching struggled and the hitting was weak.  I believed, though, that the poor showing could not last but was not sure how long.   Despite starting 0-6, our beloved 'Sox have inched close to .500 ball and within 3.5 games of first place.

The O's and J's have fallen to the cellar -- what say ye now Buck?  What happened to that fast start?  Don't you know that MLB is a marathon and not a sprint?  Okay, I will admit to being still a bit miffed at Buck and will give him credit for calling both Tito and Theo.

Hopefully, the 'Sox will take care of business in Camden Yards and silence Buck and the O's.  A sweep would be just what the doctor ordered.

No longer a cellar dweller

Dice-K turns in another gem of start.  Great to see him pitching the way everyone had expected when 'Sox paid over $100M to sign him in 2007.  Along with Dice-K, Beckett and Lester have pitched well.  It would be great if Buchholz and Lackey can ride that wave.   Good 7 or 8 IPs from the starter keeps the bullpen fresh.

Nice to see Craw-fish turn in a 2-hit performance last night.  Ells is back to leading off and now has 5 SBs this season.  Good to see that Lowrie is still in the lineup and hitting well.

Youkilis should return tomorrow - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Good news on the injury front. After an impressive 2010 season as a fill-in, Kalish showed promise. He could be a valuable call up in the event of injury to other OF's.

Youk is tough. Glad he'll be back soon.

Lowrie continues his hot hitting

Where would the 'Sox be had it not been for Lowrie igniting them with his hitting?   As much I love and respect Tito, for the life of me I cannot understand why Lowrie did not play game 1 against the A's?  Perhaps he wanted to get Scutaro in the lineup.

If Theo considers trading Lowrie for a catcher, he's nuts.  I would trade Scutaro first but now Lowrie.

As to Lowrie's future, he defense seems to be a bit suspect.  Perhaps he could be the next DH?  Big Papi will probably walk after this season.  'Sox have SS Iglesias at Pawtuckett.  Lowrie is a switch hitter....hmm something to consider.

Examining the Red Sox catching conundrum - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

One cannot help but wonder how Salty has been impacted by the pressure of playing in Boston, the tough start for the 'Sox, and the big shoes of Tek that he is trying to fill. Though 'Tek is really struggling at the plate, I would take that for the confidence pitchers have in him and his experience behind the plate.

I feel better with 'Tek starting than Salty. Though it is early, Salty may be on a short leash.

As to possible trades, 'Sox have some bargaining chips in their farm system. This situations bears watching.

2 in a row...!

Ells beginning to hit, nice 3-run HR.  Lowrie still hitting well.  Nice outing from Lester and the bullpen.

Craw-fish still looking to get into a groove at the plate.

The O's are beginning their annual fall from fall place -- not surprising but they have young talent to be reckoned with.

Boston Red Sox - Lowrie happy to lead the way for Red Sox - The Boston Globe

One cannot help but be very happy for Jed Lowrie. The guy has battled injuries and illness the past few years and he is now healthy. His emergence could not come at a better time for the 'Sox as they desperately need a hot bat. My advice to Tito: ride that hot bat of Jed's until either he cools down or the other bats come to life. Regardless, I hope that Theo is watching and considers Jed a keeper, not trade bait for down the road. Despite the millions committed to A-Gon and Craw-fish, almost forgotten Jed Lowrie is the early start. A real feel good story so far for 2011. You go, Jed. You have earned this time in the spotlight. Keeping in mind...

We have Tito at the helm, the same guy who led his team back from a 3-0 deficit in 2004 against the Evil Empire, something that had never been done in MLB.  So as long as he is at the helm and exhorting his team to "stay in the moment", the 'Sox will be okay and will bounce back.   I bet that Tito often draws upon that experience as the source of encouragement and faith in himself as the skipper.

Just like they wrote it up...

A solid 7 innings from the starter (Beckett), Bard to set-up, and Pap to close.  This is what Double T (Tito and Theo) had in mind when they put together this team.  Timely hitting and good defense.  Taken all together, this was a nice and much-needed win today.

I continue to appreciate the contributions from Jed Lowrie and Mike Cameron.

Today was a game to build on.  Now, hand the ball to the next starter and continue the confidence building.

Despite the terrible start...

'Sox are 4 1/2 games out of first place.  Had they gotten off to a 9-2 start instead, I can only imagine the "sky's the limit" musings coming out of the Boston sportswriters.  I am not ready to push the panic button yet.  Worried and concerned?  Yes.  Panicking?  Not yet.  Of course, if the slide continues and they go to 3-17, then I'll panic.

It's not how you start but rather how you finish.  I recall many seasons in the 70's in which they would start off hot in April and wilt in May-June or collapse after the All-Star break.  In '74, they led most of the season only to collapse and have the Orioles overtake them in September.  I still cannot get over the '78 meltdown of blowing a 13-game lead after the All-Star break.

It starts with good starting pitching, manufacturing runs, and getting some confidence and momentum going.  They don't need Dice-K or Lackey giving up 6 runs in 3 IP.  Tito needs to manage like an NL manager and play some "small ball" and see what happens.  Waiting for the big inning, like the 'Sox, of old will only get them so far.

BTW, what's up the contract extension for Gonzales that the Boston Globe kept saying was a luxury tax issues and would have to wait until the season started?  Though not what I had expected, I would say the season has indeed started.

Biggest Questions Marks Going In?

Biggest Questions Marks Going In? (Originally posted 3/29/11)

I would say the following:

1. Is Salty an everyday catcher or will 'Tek end up catching more games than Salty?

2. Will Pap bounce back? If not, how long does Tito stay with him and who steps up: Bard or Jenks?

3. Will Beckett and Lackey earn their big bucks this year?

4. Will Buchholz perform like last year?

5. What can we expect from Dice-K?

To me, these are big question marks. Of course, the injury bug, like for all teams, is lurking out there like Allstate's mayhem man.

With 11 games down, I would add:

6.  Will Youk's thumb injury/surgery impact him at the plate and how will he adjust to playing 3B again?

7.  How big of a distraction will A-Gonz's contract be?

8.  How will Craw-fish adjust to playing in pressure-city Boston?

Just one word sums up tonight's game: Ugly. At least Craw-fish had 2 hits. Tito should keep Lowrie in the lineup for a while -- he's hitting! Sports – Sports News - Boston.com

Johnny Damon: 'You're welcome for 2004' - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

'Sox fans should "forgive and forget". Yes, he went to the "Evil Empire" and yes he took more money and/or an extra year to play with them. But, he gave it his all while in Boston. He was no Manny. He played hard and he played hurt. Johnny Damon: 'You're welcome for 2004' - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Sox extend Buchholz

I would have rather seen where the 'Sox finally come to terms with an extension with Gonz.  Neverthless, I like the idea of locking up the young talent to long-terms prior eligibility for free agency.  This was a practice of Dan Duquette who locked-up team cornerstones such as 'Tek, Nomar, and Lowe when he was at the helm.

Beckett comes through for 'Sox

Could the Beckett of old be re-emerging?  If so, he could not have picked a better time than last night.  The former ace of the staff came through when the 'Sox really needed him and gave the bullpen some much needed rest.  That is the role of your ace or stopper.  Perhaps his performance could be the list that the 'Sox needed.  Good to have you back, Josh.  Now, let's keep it going against the Devil Rays!

Silver Lining

I see that Jed Lowrie went 3 of 4 yesterday.  Tito may need to stay with him for a few games.  Wake pitched 2 innings yestereday.

1-7 is pretty bad.  But, they will start hitting and the pitching should get better.

Finally, a W to break the ice

even better that it was at home and against the "Evil Empire".  In reviewing the boxscore, one cannot help but notice that Youk, Ells, Scutter, Crawford, and Salty all are batting south of the Mendoza line.  Eventually, they will come around and begin hitting.

I think Tito is tinkering with the lineup to find the best order given the addition of Craw-fish and A-Gonz.  (if anyone has some ideas as to monikers for these guys, please post 'em).

Bullpen did a nice job today to preserve a 5-inning W for Lackey.  Seems to me that a 5-inning performance requiring four relievers should not qualify a starter for a win; but, those are the rules though I have thought that a minimum of 6 innings, or 2/3 of a game, should be the minimum.  But, I am the same guy who feels that the Save rules are way too liberal.  Discussion for another day, another post.  Let's enjoy this first W.

Buchholz should go for the 'Sox tomorrow.  Red Sox Nation should feel a bit less stressed out tonight.

Home Cooking

Hopefully, the return home will provide our 'Sox with much needed infusion of settling down.  I have to remind myself of the following:  (i) Youk and Pedey are coming off injuries from last year (ii) A-Gon, too, is coming off of shoulder surgery and adapting to a new league (iii) A-Gon's contract situation could be distraction to him (iv) Crawford may be feeling a sense of great expectations given the contract he signed (v) Big Papi & Pap, too, may be feeling the pressure of this being their walk year.  We'll see.

From projected 100-game winner to "hapless"

As expected, the Boston press has already turned against our beloved 'Sox. Like the old saying goes, "with friends like this, who needs enemies"? Nothing suprising though. When Bill Belichick's Patriots won 3 Super Bowls in 4 seasons, he was hailed as a genius, the franchise a "dynasty". Now, he is the subject of regular criticsm and second guessing by those in the Boston press corps who have never coached nor donned a football uniform. And, the "dynasty" is now considered in decline by the Boston sports elite. Boston is a tough town that eats its own sports teams. The sports writers pilloried the great Ted Williams. Yaz began to hear the boo birds in 1968, after his phenomenal '67 season of winning both the Triple Crown and MVP, all because the fans felt he was not hitting enough HRs. BTW, Yaz won the AL batting championship in '68, too. Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Staying away from the Boston sportswriters today

I can only imagine what they are writing this morning. I suspect these same folks who were writing previously and speculating about a 100-win season are now turning to gloom and doom. A 3-1 loss to Cleveland does not help. But, once the 'Sox straight stringing together some W's, these 100-win prognosticators will come out of the wood work again.

Ranger Blues

Our beloved 'Sox leave Texas with its tail tucked between its legs, outhit and outpitched.  Now, on to Cleveland before hosting the Yankees in Fenway next weekend.

'Sox need that first W before hosting the Yankees.

Lackey still lacking

He could not even get out of the 4th inning yesterday.  He and his mega-million contract was a big question on my list going into 2011.

Ells and A-Gon starting off well, Big Papi, too.

Need a W today.

Opening Day Behind Us Now

Though it would have been nicer to win opening day, at least it is behind us now.  161 to go.  It's not how you start, it's how you finish.  'Sox have never played well against the Rangers in April.  One game does not make a season.

So, hand the ball the Buchholz and let's get that first "W" for 2011.

Former Red Sox GM Lou Gorman dies - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Though I did not agree with many of his trades and free agent signings, I will give him credit for not standing pat. He went out and made the deals to help improve his ballclub. He was not afraid to take a shot. He went down swinging, not with the bat on his shoulders. No doubt, there were some free agent signing busts: Jack Clark; Danny Darwin; Matt Young; Andre' Dawson; etc. He pulled off some good trades: a couple of pitchers in '86 to Seattle for Dave Henderson and Spike Owen. Both played major roles in the playoffs. Also, in '86, he acquired young relievers Wes Gardner and Calvin Schiraldi for Bobby Ojeda. Later, he acquired Lee Smth from the Cubs for Al Nipper and Schiraldi. Then, he ended up trading Smith to the Cardinals for Tom Brunansky, having signed closer Jeff Reardon in the offseason. The deal for Larry Anderson in exchange for Jeff Bagwell will certainly go down in history as a bad one. But, we all make decisions and deals we would like to have back. I heard him interviewed once. He seemed like a gracious man. In short, he wanted the 'Sox to win it all and he came so close in '86. For his efforts, I tip my hat to him and grieve for his family. Washington believes in Saltalamacchia - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

He has been handed a great opportunity in a great situation. He learn from a classy guy like 'Tek, does not have to feel pressure to hit with the lineup the 'Sox have on paper, and on a team that needs a young catcher. Can he put it all together this year?

Jason Bay's Injury Woes Continue As Outfielder Could Start Regular Season on Mets' DL - New York Mets - NESN.com

Though I thought his asking price for a long term deal was high, I was a big supporter of Jason Bay though he was not a super defensive OF. I hated to see him leave Boston via free agency. I believe that the 'Sox had concerns as to Bay's long term health. It appears that their concerns were valid. I wish him well and hope that he gets healthy. Biggest Questions Marks Going In?

I would say the following:

1.  Is Salty an everyday catcher or will 'Tek end up catching more games than Salty?

2.  Will Pap bounce back?  If not, how long does Tito stay with him and who steps up: Bard or Jenks?

3.  Will Beckett and Lackey earn their big bucks this year?

4.  Will Buchholz perform like last year?

5.  What can we expect from Dice-K?

To me, these are big question marks.   Of course, the injury bug, like for all teams, is lurking out there like Allstate's mayhem man.

To his credit, Showalter called Theo.  I am glad that he did.  Are you listening Rex Ryan?

In scrolling through the photo gallery of those who patrolled CF in Fenway, I was really impressed with the quality of players. The gallery did not cite Rick Miller who had a great glove but just an average bat. Reggie Smith was on the "Impossible Dream" team in '67. My favorite was Fred Lynn. He had to be one of the most graceful players I had ever seen. I saw him once turn his back completely on a hard hit ball to the "Bermuda Triangle" and turn around just as the ball landed safely into his glove. He had such a smooth, made-for-Fenway inside-out swing. He used the Monster to his advantage. Johnny Pesky called Lynn about one of the most talented players he had ever seen. I saw him when Boston came to the old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. The ball jumped off his bat. He played CF with the reckless abandon of the Brooklyn Dodgers' Pete Reiser often crashing into the wall and diving for fly balls. It broke my heart when they traded Lynn to the Angels, thinking he would not re-sign to stay in Boston. The goes that he had a football scholarship to USC and played safety. During a practice session, he decided to up and take on Sam "the Bam" Cunningham on a goal line stand drill and suffered a serious concussion. Afterwards, he asked Athletic Director John McKay if he could switch his scholarship to baseball. I still recall hawking the boxscores in '75 to see how he and Jim Rice did. How many teams' farm system can produce rookies such as Lynn and Rice? They truly were the "Goldust Twins" and "Thunder and Lightning" as Bob Watson once called them. It is such a shame that his career was hampered by injuries and his career numbers will not enable him to get into the Hall of Fame. I think he made a good choice switching to baseball. I voted for Yaz. His '67 September performance was immortal in my mind. Why does the press even given this guy print space?

Jose Canseco Calls Barry Bonds' Perjury Trial 'Ridiculous' - NESN Newswire - NESN.com
Blame it on the old "out of context" thing, Buck. "Come on, man!" as they say on "Monday Night Football". You ripped our GM. Now you say you were kidding or was misunderstood? That's almost as bad as that "I smoked but did not inhale" uttered in 1992 election. Be a man, Buck, and admit you got caught in the emotion of the game, envying the deep pockets of big market teams (one of which you once managed), and wanting to win. I have more respect for that passion for winning than the back-pedaling and "out of context" excuse.

Now, Buck, if you had said that, like most good GM's, Theo has made some good moves and bad moves, you would have been on sound ground with the Redsox Nation. But, don't rip our GM who built teams that won the World Series in 2004 and 2007. By the way, Buck, when was the last time the O's won it all? early 80's with Joe Altobelli at the helm?

Buck, I just hope you don't end up as the TV analyst for any of the networks during the postseason. You have lost objectivity in my book. Hope you enjoy your first trip to Fenway as the O's skipper. Bring your ear plugs so that our fans' reaction to you won't be taken out of context.

Rex Ryan has a kindred spirit in Buck Showalter

Nothing like a few fire works before the season starts. In recent years the O's have had good, young players. Historically, they have been a pain in the side of the 'Sox. Maybe this is his way to draw interest and more fans into Camden Yards.

Gonzalez agent, Theo meet - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

This deal needs to get done in April. Otherwise, the Boston Press will have a field day all season with the speculation, second guessing, and blame game. All this will serve as an unnecessary distraction.

Plus, it would be awful to have trade 3 top prospects to "lease" Gonzalez for one season.

Boston Red Sox - Gonzalez’s agent Boggs wades right in to Red Sox camp - The Boston Globe

Within this article is another instance in which Pap struggled again. His fastball is clocking at 91 mph and he seems to be struggling with his other pitches. Call me a worry wart, but I would not have him in the closer's role until he can work through these issues. Tito has other options with closers.

Boston Red Sox - Red Sox left with a decision - The Boston Globe

This will be a key decision. Having a LHP out of the pen is a key component to a championship team. In 2004, we had Alan Embree; Okie in 2007.

Sentimentally, I would like to see the re-emergence of Okie. But, Theo has brought in several lefties to preview in Spring Training.

Red Sox Live Blog: Red Sox Pitching Fuels 2-1 Win Over Yankees - Boston Red Sox - NESN.com

I keep telling myself that it's only Spring Training, that these games do not count. It is just nice to see a team playing so well as it prepares for opening day. The expectations for this team are high. Injuries from last season have healed. Theo went out and added more power and speed to the lineup. And, he has re-stocked his bullpen.

About two weeks until opening day and counting!

Another prospect making noise - Lars Anderson

Admittedly, I was not too impressed with his showing via September call-up.  But, this Spring Training, he is drawing favorable comments from Tito.  One problem though:  the 1B job is locked up with Gonzales, Youk behind him, Big Papi (maybe), Lowrie as well.

Who knows, he might be a good trade bait to package with Dice-K.

Dice-K, Drew, and Pap

Definitely walk years for the latter two.  Just discovered that Dice-K was signed to a 6-year deal -- yikes!  see below.

Major League Baseball careerOn October 25, 2006, Scott Boras was announced as Matsuzaka's agent to represent him in any contract dealings in the Major Leagues. On November 2, Matsuzaka was officially granted permission by the Lions to pursue a career in Major League Baseball via the posting system.

On November 14, the Boston Red Sox won the bidding rights to Matsuzaka with a bid of $51,111,111.11, outbidding the Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees.[11][12][13] The enormous figure — two[14][15] to three[16] times the Lions' payroll — astounded both Japanese and American baseball executives.[16] The Red Sox had 30 days to sign Matsuzaka to a contract. If a deal could not be reached, Matsuzaka would have returned to the Lions, nullifying the bid. Scott Boras refused to consider the posting fee as part of the contract negotiations, while Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein recalled, "We tried to come up with a total number, for the post and contract, that made sense."[17]

On December 11, Epstein, Red Sox owner John W. Henry and CEO Larry Lucchino boarded a plane to "[take] the fight directly to [Boras]".[18] Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe asserted that Boras, by refusing to negotiate, was using Matsuzaka as a protest or "test case of the posting system."[18]

On December 13, Matsuzaka and Boras joined Red Sox GM Theo Epstein, CEO Larry Lucchino, and Chairman Tom Werner on a private plane owned by Red Sox owner John Henry headed for Boston. During the flight—which was followed by both the Boston and the Japanese media[19]—the group agreed to terms on a contract. Journalist Nobuhiro Chiba characterized Japanese reaction to the signing: "I think the people are relieved to send Daisuke to the Boston Red Sox."[19] In Boston, Matsuzaka passed his physical and signed the six-year, $52 million contract, which could be worth as much as $60 million if he fulfills incentives. The details of the contract include a $2 million signing bonus with a $6 million salary in 2007, $8 million in each of the following three seasons (2008–2010), and $10 million in each of the final two years (2011–2012).[20] He also has a no-trade clause, specially constructed by the Red Sox to fit Matsuzaka's contract.[21]

Ells is having a nice spring training

He seems to have pushed aside the painful memories and hurt feelings from last year.  I look for him to have a breakout season.  With Crawford in the lineup, 'Sox could easily exceed 100 SB's this season provided they both stay healthy and get on base in running situations.  That kind of speed on the base paths coupled with the potential power could be a potent combination.

Boston Red Sox - Red Sox’ Papelbon has rough outing - The Boston Globe

I have to remind myself that this Spring Training. Yet, an implosion like yesterday is a reminder of Pap's 8 blown saves last season. In 2007, he was dominant, almost unhittable.

This is Pap's walk year and it seems that Theo is not committed to him long-term. I would think that Pap would be motivated about becoming a free agent and testing the waters for a lucrative long-term deal that other teams may offer him.

Catching up with Lou Merloni

My biggest memories of Lou Merloni was that he was a good friend of Nomar Garciaparra, was a good utility player, and complained about being on the I-95 shuttle between Boston and Pawtucket. He was not a star but a good player to have around due to his versatility.

Good news on Beckett...

glad he averted serious injury and that the coaching staff are exercising caution with him.  Despite the scare, I believe I would have had greater concern if something similiar had happened to Lester or Bucholz.  For me right now, those two are the anchors of the starting five.  Beckett, Lackey, and Dice-K, to me, are big question marks coming into the season.

Beltre ailing...(from NESN)

He seems to be around injuries frequently, either his own or others.  Report from NESN below.

Initially, things didn't sound all that bad for Adrian Beltre following a calf injury. Now, it looks like he might miss a little more time than first expected.

Initial reports indicated that Beltre would miss two weeks with a strained calf, but according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman, the injury could sideline Beltre for a month.

The diagnosis has progressively gotten worse for the new Rangers third baseman, whose calf injury didn't seem to be much of an issue at first. Beltre went from being expected to not miss any time, to being out two weeks, to the most recent news of his absence being up to a month.

This would obviously put Beltre's status for Opening Day in jeopardy. The Rangers open the season on April 1 by hosting the Red Sox.

Jenks vs. Guillen

These two guys continue to go at each other publicly.  Though I am not a fan of Ozzie Guillen, I will give him his due as having managed the 2005 ChiSox to a WS championship.  Ozzie seems to enjoy the limelight a bit too much for my liking and he plays to the camera.   Jenks needs to put the ChiSox past behind him and focus on being a Bosox.  I think his addition is an important one to keep from seeing Bard burn out from overuse and as an insurance policy if Pap struggles.

Good to see Youk, Pedey, Ells, and Cam back in action against their college opponents yesterday.

John Farrell

Have been reading some very good reports on John Farrell in his new role at Toronto.  Sure going to miss his calm presence on the team and overall professionalism.  I wish him well in Toronto.  Many baseball pundits also believe that he has a future in being a GM one day.  I think that the 'Sox were very fortunate to have had John as pitching for the past few years given the interest that other teams expressed in him.

Quiet on the 'Sox front

Bad break for the Cardinal pitcher, Wainwright, who will require the Tommy John procedure and miss all of 2011.  You hate to see injuries like this in Spring Training.

Looking forward to when the exhibition games begin and we can start reading about how players are coming along.  Hope some of the young guys have a chance to play and draw attention.

Good that Gonzo took a day off from swinging the bat -- let's not rush him back too soon.

The Amazing Ryan Westmoreland....

The other Ryan...

Not since 2004...

have I looked forward to the start of a season more.  That year, Schilling joined the pitching staff, went on to become a 20-game winner, and became a hero in RedSox nation lore.  What a memorable season.

The only other times I can recall was when Rice and Lynn came onboard for the '75 season.  Each had just over 100 RBI's that season.  The previous year, the 'Sox had added pitching with Rick Wise, Reggie Cleveland, Juan Marichal, and  Dick Drago.  The '75 starting five include:  El Tiante (18-14), Spaceman Bill Lee (17-9), Rick Wise (19-12), Reggie Cleveland (13-9), and Roger Moret (13-1).

Crawford consults Rice about playing the Green Monster

Rice started his career as the DH as his fielding skills were somewhat questionable.  Through hard work, he became a master of playing left field in Fenway.  I am not sure if Yaz spent much time with him, but Rice became a solid fixture in LF for the rest of his career.

I was pleased to read that Crawford, a gifted fielder, was seeking out advice from Rice.  It demonstrates that Crawford has the right attitude and work ethic.  His presence in LF should take some pressure off of Ells and allow him to "cheat" toward the triangle (as recently reported by NESN) and enable Drew to patrol closer to the RF line.

Drew is the weakest link in the OF now given his history of injuries and the hamstring issue he has now.  Ryan Kalish is the heir apparent to RF and maybe he'll play some there this year given Drew's history.

Boston Red Sox Story on NESN.com

I am currently reading a Boston Red Sox story on NESN. Link: http://www.nesn.com/2011/02/jacoby-ellsbury-surrounded-by-support-systems-in-return-to-center-field.html

I look for Ells to bounce back.  He and Crawford could easily combine to steal over 100 bases this year.

Not to get ahead of ourselves...

Big Papi, Drew, Pap, and perhaps a few others will be free agents after this season.  It will be interesting to see how this may serve as extra motivation for these players.

I am hoping that the extra bullpen help Theo has brought in will take some pressure off of Bard this year.

Talk of a 100-win season is entirely premature.  Let's get into June before such talk occurs.   Let's not forget the ex-Idiot tandem of Damon and Manny in Tampa Bay.  That will be interesting to watch this year.

Chamberlain's weight in the spotlight, again - Boston.com

More good news from the Yankees camp....!

Chamberlain's weight in the spotlight, again - Boston.com

Long-term deal for A-Gonz?

I may have missed it but I do not recall any long-term deal getting done.  Theo gave up 3 top prospects for A-Gonz.  I hope that they don't dither and end up losing him to free agency after the season.  Call me a worry wart, I guess.

Hopeful Signs

Lackey comes to camp having dropped a few pounds.  Reports that Beckett is in better shape.  Ells says he feels great.

I will hand it to Theo, he has certainly re-stocked the lineup and bullpen.
