The aging and hurting Yankees continue to mount up injuries much like our 2010 'Sox. The Celtic Great Bill Russell once spoke of injuries in the context of the NBA with the the observation that "injuries are just as much part of the game as free throws". Not sure I agree completely with that view though it bespeaks the need for a deep bench in any sport. However, there seems to be a bit of luck at times in staying away from the serious injuries. Injuries, like the proverbial ball/puck are just a matter of inches and in some cases centimeters.

Ok, I feel somewhat prophetic. You see last night, the Yankees and the Indians were on the tube. In talking to my Dad, he pointed out that Jeter only needs 7 more hits to get to 3,000. Me, being the absolute Yankee hater that I am, (there's no sugar coating it one iota), mentioned that Derek's old. I'm old too, but I don't play baseball for a living. Anyway, Dad laughed and said that Jeter could muster 7 more hits, that he wasn't completely falling apart!
ReplyDeleteWell now here we are today and the great Jeter's on the DL. Sad pumpkin! Yes, Jeter will get 7 more hits...sometime, but not soon! It's not that I don't like Jeter. He's been a class act with no 'roids, no controversy. But the fact of the matter is that Jeter wears pin-stripes. If he played for say, Oakland, I might feel differently about the man. But he's a Yankee, and a long-tenured one at that! I don't wish the man any ill at all, but I'm not exactly rooting for him either.
The great Jeter's stint on the DL is a foreshadowing of the slow demise of the Yankees. They're stocked with old geezers and no farm system. Take it from this historian. No empire lasts forever. The Yankees time has come!!
