I will never understand why Theo did not sign Cabrera. Not only was he a sure-handed, Gold Glove SS but also an aggressive and clutch hitter during the 2004 stretch. After that memorable season, Theo did not even try to re-sign him.

Why does the Globe antagonize the fans with these votes? I would have to say that for me, Nomah is the hands down favorite. I remember when I first saw him play. I wasn't dazzled by his brilliance at #6, but was totally psyched by his name. What kind of name is Nomar anyway? My Dad had to explain that Nomah's father's name was Ramon and N-O-M-A-R is Ramon spelled backwards. How cool is that? What other names can you get by spelling something backwards? Honestly, I was fascinated for the longest time by this name game. I was broken-hearted when I learned that Nomar is really Anthony N. Garciaparra!!
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, I liked his style of play. He also had a presence that was unique to baseball. (I think it stems from his name!) These days, he's a sometimes analyst for ESPN and while many people cannot say that age is a beautiful thing, it certainly can be said for Nomah. He looks so fine in those suits!!
Agree that these polls are really worthless. Though I do like going back to profile players from the 60's and 70's. I recall watching Monday Night Baseball in the 70's when Rico Petrocelli had that phenomenol year with 40 HRs and over 100 RBI's. He hit clean-up behind Yaz.
