Maybe I should stop visiting the Globe's website. Each time I do lately, there is news of another playing landing on the DL. The Globe reports that 424 games have been lost by players this year due to injury.
Once the injured start returning, this should provide an infusion of confidence and reinforcements provided that the current healthy bodies stay healthy and can hold down the fort.

Is this some type of undeclared player strike?? This has gone far beyond just random bad luck, it must be some form of conspiracy.
ReplyDeleteNOOOO! Talk 'about the shot heard 'round the world!! Not Tek!! He's the one constant you can count on, banged up and all. Now we have to entrust our starters to two guys we barely know. Yes, Kevin Cash has been around the Sox before, but he's the like the relative that you sorta know that pops in and out every now and then. He's a member of the family, but how well do you really know him?? And Molina? Who the heck is this guy??
ReplyDeleteOk, enough emotion. We'll get through the next 9 games. The veterans will step up and keep us together. Post-break, Vic should be back, Beckett on his way, and Buch for sure. This is a temporary, albeit major, set back. However, with the break coming up, now's the time to take advantage of the R&R. We've had our quota of injuries for the season and then some. The MASH unit's next stop: Yankee Stadium!!!
I have not seen such a rash of injuries since the '67 Cincinnati Reds who had a DL with up to 10 or more players at one time: Pete Rose, Chico Ruiz; Gary Nolan; Tommy Helms; and several others.
ReplyDeleteI would much rather be where we are now being in contention with regulars coming back in the weeks ahead. I remember so vividly that the '78 'Sox had a 13-game lead at the All Star break, were completely healthy, and simply collapsed. Some blame manager Don Zimmer for not resting his regulars enough.
It was a titanic crash in 'Sox history.
