Theo, in some years you have resisted the tempation to trade highly touted prospects for a missing ingredient to a championship team; in other years, you have made trades that, in retrospect, you probably wish you could take back (e.g, David Murphy, Freddie Sanchez, Cla Meredith).
If you really think that this team, once healthy, has a legitimate shot to go far into the post-season so that its starting rotation can outpitch the rest, then take a shot. But, please do not make the mistake of the ghosts of GMs past and give up talent only to see our beloved team fail to make the postseason. Make sure that any move you make balances the present, the future, and probability of this team winning it all. There are many skeptics out there. There are some who may have written off the season but we still have a lot of baseball to play. And, you if you do make a move, please get some help for our bullpen. Our young closer-in-waiting, Daniel Bard, has been overworked. Many are concerned about his long-term health.
In short, get the right help but do not pay an arm and leg for it.

I love it! An open letter to Theo emphasizing that he not pay an arm and a leg for help, literally!! The arm is representative of any of our young pitching prospects, and the leg is symbolic of our position players. Genius!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the trade deadlines, the hot stoves. This time of year teams are either looking to shed dead weight or give up the ghost for a shot at the post-season. I tend to agree that it's easy to panic when you think the season's going down the tubes and trade away the farm to regain some semblance of respectability. Loosing 100 games like the Nationals did last season is a pretty bitter pill to swallow. Sports people, whether a GM, a player or a fan are competitive by nature. It's way too hard, and a bit unhealthy, to watch what was touted as a promising season go up in flames.
However, I think we have to be smart about this. We can acquire a decent and helpful player that can give us a boost to get back on track in the direction of the post-season. It's going to take coughing up something. A prospect, a regular, but someone's gonna get dealt. Theo doesn't strike me as someone who would absolutely lose his head and bet the farm (no pun intended), but a downward spiral makes him look bad too. I think we have enough potential tradable material that he can barter us a good player without going ape.
