Silver Lining

Southpaw makes a good point.  If 'Sox were struggling with a completely healthy roster, despondency would really set it.   I just cannot recall seeing so many key players on the DL.

I am really glad to see how they have been very cautious with Beckett and Bucholz.

We have gotten a glimpse of solid role players for the imnediate future: McDonald and Nava.  Wonder if Nava would fetch a good middle reliever in a trade?  Felix D. has pitched well in 2 outings.  He definitely has promise.  Theo, don't trade Felix D.

I recall years when the starting rotation lacked a LHP.  Can you imagine having two LHP's in the starting rotation?  We have not had anything like that since the days of Bruce Hurst, John Tudor, and Bobby Ojeda -- all starting LHP's before Tudor was traded to the Pirates for Mike Easler (who was traded for Don Baylor); Ojeda was traded to the Mets for Wes Gardiner and Calvin Schiraldi.  Hurst left via free agency.  In short, Theo, don't trade Felix D.  LHP's are too valuable.

Does anyone know how Kason Gabbard is doing at AAA?  He had been traded to the Rangers for Eric Gagne but returned to the organization.  He was developing nicely until Theo made that trade.

I would really prefer to see the 'Sox use Bard more sparingly in the 2nd half.  Would like to see Bowden given a chance to pitch out of the bullpen.  Bard made the conversion from starter to the bullpen.

When the injured get healthy and return, hopefully they will be fresh for the 2nd half and get into a groove quickly.

Hopefully, the Yankees will fade and lose steam.

  1. I think the latest developments are that Bowden's going to the pen in Pawtucket and the Sox are looking for "pen pals." I still think they aren't using Atchison to his potential. They use him only when they have to, which is the wrong approach. I hate to say it, but Okie Dokie may be done. Is this the second year of his contract extention? Ram-Ram has to go. From Day 1, he's been unreliable, and that's frightening!! I predict they will sign someone for the bullpen before the trade deadline is over.

I did end up going to McGreevy's tonight. Wow! They have a lot of cool photos from turn of the century Boston baseball. This historian and Irish lass was satisfied on all levels.

I thought of the song lyrics to Tessie on the ride home and how appropriate they are now, given the state of Sox: "Tessie is the Royal Rooters' rally cry/Tessie is the tune they always sung. Tessie echoed April through October nights after serenading Stahl, Dineen and Young.....Tessie, Nuf Ced McGreevey shouted, "we're not here to mess around. Boston, you know we love you madly/Hear the crowd roar to your sound/Don't blame us if we ever doubt you/You know we couldn't live without you/Tessie, you are the only only only"

Maybe the boys should go to McGreevy's. They do have a Beckett burger. The thing is the actual size of home plate. If you finish it, not only do you get bragging rights, but they give you a shirt that states that you beat the burger. You'll look stylish in that shirt on the way to the emergency room.
