To have played through the injuries the 'Sox have had coupled with a bad April, the Red Sox Nation has to be pleased to be still in the hunt. As the injured return, those who held down the fort will have gained invaluable experience and confidence (Nava and McDonald in particular).
Overall, I would hope that the team's psyche and spirit are good.
As to immediate needs, beyond getting the injured healthy, I think we need another arm in the bullpen. I do not believe that we need to trade for a veteran but Theo may do so. Teams that have or are about to throw in the towell may start scrutinizing the contenders' farm systems looking for a prospect with a high side potential.
My advice to Theo is to stand pat. Remember trading away Freddie Sanchez for Jeff Suppan; Kason Gabbard for Eric Gagne. Avoid the big splash trades. The Yankees did not get Cliff Lee and they are not invincible.

Game on, baby!! We're all rested up and ready to go for the second half of the season!! My new best friend, Wakie Wakie, is on the mound tonight. That's right, boys. Give the ball to the veteran to set the tone for the second half!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with SHSAGE regarding the need for bull pen help. Bard is taxed to the max. The Sox are so careful with Paps that Bard is the one getting over-used. But, hello, we have Atchison!! Tito needs to make better use of this guy. He's shown himself to be quite reliable and effective when called upon. DelCarmen is scheduled to make a rehab start, but he should be back with us soon. I wouldn't rely too much longer on Ram-Ram and Okie (although I think contract wise, we're stuck with Okie). If the Sox can obtain reliable help for the pen without giving up a major prospect, they'll be doing fine. Yes, Theo, avoid another Gagne disaster!!
As a P.S., I have to confess that it took sheer will power not to get on Stub Hub and buy an insanely over-priced ticket for tonight's game against Texas. When in Boston, right? But, I went to a game a couple of weeks ago and had a major spending melt down at Jerry's the other night, so I decided to be good and not go to the game. Being good is no fun!!
