Despite 13Ks, No W for Lester
A game like this shows how the 'Sox miss the bats of VMart and Petey. Was surprised to see Cameron out of the lineup given his recent hitting. Maybe Tito does not want to risk another injury to Cam but, come on Tito, now is not the time to be resting hot bats! We're now 4 GB in the Wildcard.

I'm so angry this morning. I watched our ace strike out batter after batter, inning after inning last night. I thought it really was the Year of the Pitcher. I thought our Johnny was going to throw a perfect game. He seemed like he was in a trance. His pitches were spot-on every time. I bet he heard no noise in SafeCo except for the sweet sound of the ball at 95 mph slapping the leather of Kevin Cash's glove. And then came the pop fly that should have been routine. I'll bet in the slow motion world that Lester was in he expected that ball to find its way into Eric Patterson's glove. Well it did...and then it bounced out. The spell was broken. Suddenly SafeCo came alive with noise. Where did all those screaming people come from? The zone was gone. Reality set in. Lester was rudely awakened. And just as quickly as it came, the perfection was shattered. The game fell apart after that.
ReplyDeleteBefore I even logged on this morning, I thought about that devil miss by Patterson. The historian started to think about the "what ifs," the counterfactuals that people in my profession like to imagine as giving a different outcome to history. What if that idiot Patterson had gobbled up that fly ball? What if Tito had started Cam in center? What if D-Mac had been out there, or Everyman Hall? What if the spell hadn't been broken? We could've notched a win and Johnny could've had one more glorious title to add to his illustrious resume: a perfect game.
But that not what happened. I'm not the only one who thought about what might have been. The Globe's "Extra Bases" blog pondered the same thing. That error shook Lester. He relies the on the guys behind him to be there for those routine plays. And yes, this could have happened to anyone on the field. Errors happen. Nobody's perfect. But Saturday night, someone almost was. It's too painful for me. I can only imagine how Lester feels this morning. Eric Patterson, you're walking back to Boston!!
