If the guy could ever get his pitch count under control, perhaps he can pitch more than 5-6 innings. I do not understand why he does not just go after hitters rather than nibbling around the plate and wasting his pitches. He taxes the bullpen.
Does anyone know how much longer the 'Sox have him under contract? I am thinking at least one more year.

I understand the point about efficiency. Dice-K has never been economical--well maybe once when we thought he was pitching a no-hitter. To be honest, Farrell and Tito are watching the pitch count. I think sometimes Tito waits too long to get someone up in the pen, and while that guy warms up, the starter goes belly-up. This happened Sunday with Lackey. By the way, there was no post about Sunday's game. Here is my eye-witness report. Lackey actually pitched fairly well. The errors cost us that game. The score wouldn't have gotten away from us as quickly as it did if it wasn't for the errors and wild pitches. Marco Polo needs to do better job at short. What is it with us and shortstops?? But I was watching Lackey in particular. When his pitch count got to 100, Tito got some guys up throwing in the pen. By the time Richardson was ready to come in, the damage had been done and Lackey had a pitch count of 111 or 113! What is the point of limiting your starter if you wait until the game's completely out of control before you decide to bring a reliever in? I have to say, the only thing going for the Orioles is that kid Matsuz. He's the same guy that pitced against us only a month ago when the Sox were at Camden Yards. Too bad we can't acquire him. He's not half bad.
ReplyDeleteI cannot fatham why Theo did not re-sign Cabrera after the 2004 season. He was Gold Glove SS with good pop in his bat. He went out and signed Renteria who was a bust.
ReplyDeleteOf course, they traded Hanley Ramirez for Lowell and Beckett.
The "maturity" issues that concerned the 'Sox brass about Hanley have surfaced but he is an All Star talent. I felt very mixed about that trade for at that time, Hanley had not made it to the majors. Of course, Beckett and Lowell were key in the 2007 WS championship season, particularly in the playoffs.
