If Theo wants to give the 'Sox a legitimate shot at postseason, they need help in the bullpen. We do not need a marquee pitcher, like an Eric Gagne, but rather a solid set-up/mid-relief guy who can come in, throw strikes, and get out. A groundball pitcher would be ideal but not essential if the guy can get people out.
I like the sound of this bullpen:
CL Pap
SU/CL (set-up)Bard
SU Atchison
SU Bowden
SU ???? (via trade)
DFA - Okajima and Ramirez. These guys cannot be counted on.

Don't forget that we also have Wake in long relief (for what it's worth). Atchison can also do long relief.
ReplyDeleteWEEI is reporting that Toronto wants a top prospect for Scott Downs. For the Sox, that'd be someone like Iglasias. Personally, I can live without this guy. The need for relief is here and now.
I hate trade deadline time of year like I hate the offseason. Lots of meddling and too many surprises are not good for the fans!!
Jose Iglasias is supposed to be the shortstop of the future. That is why they signed Scutaro to a 2-year deal as a "bridge" until he is ready. I would pass on Downs. If we were hitting on all cylinders and this guy would be a key contributor, then maybe.
ReplyDeleteIn 2007, we gave up David Murphy and Kason Gabard for Eric Gagne and we did not even need him. Fortunately, we won it all in 2007 but I really hate seeing prospects produce for many years for other ballclubs and we "lease" a player for 60 games in hopes he is the missing link.
I think Downs is off our radar since the Sox aren't willing to give up a big name prospect. I did see that Delcarmen and Ram-Ram were dangled as potential trade bait. Hmmm...makes me wonder what we could get for them. You gotta give something to get something and if we really want to make a run for the post-season, we're going to have to be willing to part with something of value. Otherwise, we may as well keep what we got.
ReplyDeleteIn other trade news, (but who can believe the rumor mill), the Tigers and Rangers have backed off on Mikey despite the fact that the MASH unit took out some key Detroit starters. Mikey said before going to the PawSox that if he wasn't activated at the end of his rehab stint then he was going home. If he retires, he doesn't get paid. If the Sox can't find a suitable home for him (I'd like to offer mine!) then they will have to figure out how to manage their position players better in the remaining months of the regular season.
