without major hitters like Pedroia, Lowell, and VMart coupled with 2 starters like Beckett and Bucholz and with important role players like Hermida, Varitek, and Ells would still be in contention? Add to the mix a real shaky bullpen aside from the closer and set up man.
I like the reference to filling in with Quadruple-A players (Nava, McDonald, Bowden, Reddick).

As you know, I hate to give any kind of props to Theo. Just typing his name pains me. But I have to say that we have one of the best farm systems in baseball. These youngins have come in and made a hell of a difference when the veterans went down. This speaks volumes about the kids we sign. It also is a definite comfort to know that when folks like Mikey and Tek are bordering on their retirement years that we can bring up home-grown folks from the organization. Yeah, trades and signing free agents are a part of the game too, but there's something to be said for bringing up your own homies.
ReplyDeleteHaving seen many years when the farm system was empty, depleted by GM Duquette's trading awaying prospects to get that one player to push the 'Sox in the WS, I truly believe that developing one's own talent is the key. In the 70's 'Sox system produced: Jim Rice; Fred Lynn; Dewey Evans; Pudge Fisk; Cecil Cooper; Rick Burleson; Butch Hobson; Juan Beniquez; Don Aase; Bob Stanley.
