Bullpen Woes

Blowing a 6-1 lead in the 9th inning is hard to believe and unacceptable.  Staked to that kind of lead, the pen should not have allowed the game to go to 13 innings.

We have blogged before as to concerns over Pap.  He is just not consistent.  He is used to be practically automatic.  Delcarmen is not the lights out set-up guy he used to be.  Okey has not been okay this year.

Nevertheless, a win is a win and this one was badly needed.  It sure beat a loss having blown a 6-1 ninth inning lead.  Those types of losses can be deflating.

  1. A few observations. First, since I had 3+ hours to kill before the game, I tuned in to the PawSox game on the radio where our Mr. Lowell was making his first rehab start. Only in the minor leagues can one face a pitcher named Charlie Furbush. The Mud Hen's starter proved to be pretty good in spite of his name. Sorry, Charlie, but you're destined to be a journeyman minor leaguer. No Furbush has ever made it into the Majors. If only I had time on my hands. Charlie Furbush would be the lead character in my novel. Bull Durham meets Archie comics! I'll tell you why Charlie's got no chance in the bigs. The Royals had a reliever named Jimmy Gobble. This kid was decent enough, but no one wants a Gobble on their team. He was traded to Texas and sent to the minors. I don't think he's even in baseball anymore. There's another guy who deserves a children's novel. "The Adventures of Jimmy Gobble." Jimmy does gets some air time in my house. When I cut my big dog off after his treat indulgence, I tell him, "Jake, no more Jimmy Gobble!" Poor Charlie Furbush. You've got an illustrious career playing for the Mechanicsville LugNuts, pal.

I digress. Mikey wore his traditional #25 (arguably the best number is baseball) and recieved standing Os every time he came to the plate. While he went 1-5, this was his first baseball action in a month. Can't expect miracles. He told the media before the game he was excited to be there and was even looking forward to the bus ride from Toledo to Columbus! Seems like only last week he was telling the media that he didn't fear retirement. Now he's living the real baseball life: minor league venues and bus rides. Ok, Mikey. Just as long as you're still playing. By the way, anyone know how far it is from Maryland to Columbus, OH?

According to Mrs. Tom Brady, "me aaanndd Mister, Mister Lackey, Mr. Lackey, Mr. Lackey. We got a thing goin on." Can you believe a no-hitter into the 8th inning?? This is the same guy we've been disappointed in all season, right?? It must be the West Coast air that brought back memories of John's glory days. It's either that or he's seriously peaking at the right time!! Keep it up, Johnny!!

What a mess of a bullpen. Seriously!! Since I wasn't up at 2 am, did Atchinson pitch at all?? Delcarmen bombed out, Paps petered out and Okie narrowly got by. So in desperation in late innings you give the ball to Ram-Ram?? Are you freakin kidding me?? Scotty should have come on in relief of Lackey. The game would've been under control at that point!! Stupid is as stupid does. Nice going, management!!

Theo, if you're reading this, get your head on straight and get us some reliable relief for the pen! Yeah Wake's going out there but seriously, how much is he going to pitch in relief?? Okie and Delcarmen shouldn't come near a Red Sox lead ever again.
