Sure could have used a big game from Lackey

Here I go again.  For the money, 'Sox are paying this guy, he should have come up big yesterday in an important game with the Yankees.  We could have used a "stop" from this guy and taken game number 2 from the Yankees in this important series.  I put this signing up there with JD Drew in 2007 -- why? (though Drew had a big hit in the 2007 WS - but was it worth the huge payout)?

My advice to Theo:  spend the money you're shelling out on free agents on scouting and signing young prospects.

  1. Now, now. We're hoping for 3 out 4. No one said they had to be consecutive games. I'll admit that Awesome O'Clock, aka John Lackey, did not pitch the game of his life. If this had been Game 7, there'd be a lot of tears this morning. I don't necessarily have a major problem with his pitching because I think over the course of the season, it's actually improved. He looks more comfortable in a Red Sox uniform now compared to May. What I have an issue with is the lack of fundamentals--errors. Scutaro's throwing error in the pick off of Punk Bastard Swisher kind of set the table. These are basic drills that make the guys roll their eyes in Spring Training. But accuracy to your first baseman is obviously critical. That play started the downward spiral.

Lackey's not off the hook for his own fundamentals. If you're going see daylight between the bag and the runner at second, and you turn and fire, you better make damn sure you fire a strike at your shortstop, which is something Lackey failed to do. I've seen Dice-K do the same thing. You know what? Those little things make all the difference in a game. Lackey seemed to come unglued after that if he wasn't before. Instead of shagging flies at BP, maybe the pitchers should work on their pick off throws. Same thing for middle infielders. That was Scutaro's 15th error this season. That shouldn't have happened on a routine pick off.

The Globe reports that the Sox have the best night game record in baseball. Face it, we support a bunch of vampires. As long as they win, I could care less. With an 8:05 pm start tonight, hopefully blood-thirsty Beckett brings his A-game.
