Red Sox place waiver claim on Johnny Damon - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Sounds like a preemptory strike to prevent the Rays and/or the Yankees to acquire Damon.

  1. Do we know what to think about this? Word around town is that the Sox did this just to prevent the Rays and Yankees from getting Damon. WEEI reports that Damon told a Detroit sports writer that he'd really have to think long and hard about returning to Boston. I don't know what to make of this. Does Theo think we're in such bad shape that we need someone like Damon? Is Theo just playing hard ball against the Rays and Yankees? Johnny could squash the whole thing if he opts not to go to Boston. Still, if the choices are being released by the Tigers and playing for Boston, what does he do? If he still wants to play and the only other option is being released, he may suck it up and come back.

In my humble opinion, we already have a plethora of able-bodied outfielders as well as power hitters. We don't need Damon as some kind of rescue for the rest of the season. I'd love to know what the real deal is here.

  2. I think it is just a preventive measure. Damon does not want to come back to Boston. Though he was a leader for the 'Sox and a big part of their 2004 success, he went for the money and signed with the Yankees of all teams.
