Unless I have missed something in the Globe, I believe Theo's biggest concern keeping him from signing Pap to a long-term deal is his 2006 shoulder subluxation injury. Does anyone have any further insight?
Theo has locked up Pedey, Lester, and Youk to long-term deals well before they were eligible for free agency. Former GM Dan Duquette did similar deals for Nomar, 'Tek, and Derek Lowe.
Pap has 31 saves this year and 6 blown ones. Still very respectable. Perhaps I had gotten spoiled when he was a lights out closer, recording 1-2-3 innings.
Bard seems to be the closer-in-waiting. One way to look at this is: why spend big bucks on Pap when the 'Sox farm system is cranking out young, talented pitchers?
