We have blogged about some of Theo's free agent signings. Yet, the Mets have a GM, Omar Minaya, who has basically spent like a drunken sailor and has nothing to show for it. He has signed free agents such as:
OF Jason Bay
SP Oliver Perez
2B Luis Castillo
SP Pedro Martinez
OF Carlos Beltran
CL Francisco Rodriguez
There are several other signings. Despite the spending binge, Minaya has not had a winner and is surprisingly still at the helm. To think that the 'Sox had interviewed him for their GM opening. It could have been worse had they hired this guy as GM.

Did you see Gasper's article in the Globe today? He laments the bull pen woes, but fails to mention Atchison. I don't really care for Gasper ever since he said Truck Day was stupid (he got reassigned to covering the Celtics after that remark), but he makes a good point about Felix and Bowden. I feared their lack of big league miles would be an impediment to their really being able to help the Sox. Oddly enough, Gasper agrees. However, I'm not happy that everyone has blown off Atchison. How do they know he wouldn't be a stopper when they never let him pitch?
ReplyDeleteThe World According to Gasper also brings up Kerry Wood as the one that got away. I couldn't agree more. I was really hoping we'd nab him at the trade deadline before the Yankees got him. Nope. A missed opportunity.
Gasper says don't hate Tito 'cause he's doing the best with what he has, but Tito doesn't seem to "manage" his people well. Seems like in years past, everyone got an equal amount of playing time.
If this season can't be salvaged it'll be because Theo couldn't get us the viable help we needed in the pen. Instead, his bone-headed signing of a guy like Delgado (not needed in my strong opinion), will be the only thing people will remember. Yep, we could have worse GMs, but who expects anything from the Mets?
