Easing up on Lackey (a bit)
I will admit to being a bit harsh, okay very harsh, on Mr. Lackey this year. This is probably due to my high expectations of him. I give him credit for going 7 innings last night and going well over 100 in the pitch count. Plus, I read the "at the park" posts that 3 of Pap's 6 blown saves have cost Lackey potentially 3 more wins. So, he would be a 14-game winner at this juncture in the season. Nevertheless, his inconsistency and not rising to the occasion in big games this year, have troubled me.

Yes, we've all been a little hard on Awesome O'Clock, alias John Lackey. (As an aside--the Awesome O'Clock reference comes from a very colorful parody of our John Lackey from Fitzi. If you don't mind a bit of profanity--ok lots of profanity-- look up "I'm John Lackey" on Youtube!)
ReplyDeleteEarlier in the season, we had high expections for Mr. Lackey and he did not seem to live up to them. Since the All Star break, however, I have to say that he's pitched pretty decent. I think our angst stemmed from the fact that Johnny-boy didn't have a lof run support. We placed too much emphasis on pitching alone winning us games. We were critical of Lackey (rightly so in a lot of instances), but we were not as critical of the offense. Perhaps we were a bit hard on Lackey because he's basically a newbie. Since the break, he looks more comfortable like this AL East business is old hat. He's definitely found his groove in this latter half of the season.
For some reason, Mrs. Brady has associated me with Awesome O'Clock. I can't explain why but I suppose there are worse associations. I think the pitcher of old is back. I know he gave up a 3-run homer, but after that he really settled in and attacked hitters. I was very happy with his pitching on Wednesday night. We need him to come through behind Buch and Lester. I like our rotation order with the exception of Beckett. He & Dice-K should flip flop. Josh should bring up the rear.
