Boston Red Sox - In personnel department, Sox have issues - The Boston Globe

Theo certainly has his hands full in this upcoming offseason. Hard as it may be to swallow, guys like Ells and Pap could fetch good value in exchange in the trade market. I suspect that Pap's 2006 shoulder subluxation injury has kept the 'Sox from locking him up in a long-term deal.

Ortiz is not the feared hitter he was once. Some say his bat speed has diminished. Coupled with Manny's absence, it might be time to trade him as well.

Lots of uncertainty and many decisions to make. For sure, Theo will be busy this offseason. Say, Theo, wonder if any team will be willing to take Lackey of your hands?

  1. It's way too early to start worrying about next season and who may be back. I'm sure there will be much to argue about between November and February, but right now it's about a Wildcard spot. The Globe folks have worn out the "is it time to wave the white flag on the season" by-line, so they're already cooking up some drama for the off season. Yes, there's going to be tough decisions to make. But let's get through the next 50 or so regular season games before we contemplate who stays and who doesn't. For some, it's a no-brainer. Anyone know when Theo's contract is up?

  2. Unless the 'Sox surge like earlier this season, I just do not see them clinching a wildcard. If they do, they will not go far. They have been consistent all season except for spurts. Hopefully, I'm wrong but trying to be realistic.
