From the Boston Globe ---
Edwin Mejia, one of the agents for Adalberto Ibarra, updated his Twitter feed today to report that the Cuban catcher has taken his physical.
Once he is approved, the Red Sox plan to have Ibarra work out in Fort Myers before assigning him to a team.
Ibarra, 23, agreed to a five-year, $3 million deal two months ago but was stuck in the Dominican Republic waiting for a visa. He is an inexperienced catcher and will need time to acclimate to that position as well as the American professional game.
So, no, he won't be catching John Lackey tomorrow night.
It begs the question why 'Sox have so many catching prospects in the minors.

Yes, I too saw this on the Globe. Well that's great that this kid is with the organization now. Good luck to him! I think, however, the most immediate concern is the Sox' MAJOR league catching situation. So what if we have another catcher in the Minors? The cache are either on the DL or aren't anywhere close to being ready for prime time.
ReplyDelete"Lack of Mechanics" is pitching tomorrow night, so Tek will handle him. Today and tomorrow gives Vic some time to get the swelling down on that thumb. Even if that happens, I can't see how he can put his hand inside a glove and catch anything without a serious amount of pain. Even Wakie's 75 mph knuckler would hurt like hell. What happens if there's another foul tip? I hate to think we're screwed, but what's the solution if "Fingertip" Martinez can't catch??
Did I mention how good Tek is lookin' to this club right about now? Oh Captain, My Captain! Hopefully, we can keep Tek in one piece until Vic's back completely. I'd hate to see Bill "Everyman" Hall behind the plate. He's the back up's back-up. (As a tribute to an earlier post about nicknames, I'm trying to give the boys nicknames that aren't derived from their given names! How my doin' so far??)
Like the new nickname approach. "The Dead Poet's Society" is one of my favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteA lot will be asked of 'Tek. I am certain that he is up to the task.
