WEEI reported earlier today that both the Rangers and the Twins are balking at a Lowell deal. The Sox are insisting that the interested team pick up the remainder of Mikey's $7 million for the rest of the season. (An aside: the man's made $5 million since the season started. It used to be $12 million left in his contract. Want to know how much I've made since the season started?? It ain't no $5 mil!)
I've said this before, but I'll reiterate. It's poor management on the part of Tito that he can't get all his guys playing time. The mark of a good manager is his ability to do that. I'm not saying Terry's a bad manager, but for the sake of the starters, he ought to make sure they get days off. With Mikey, you can give Beltre and Youk nights off and not miss a beat at either corner.
Mikey said he wasn't waiting around for someone to get hurt. I watched Beltre slide into third rather awkwardly a while ago. I was thinking about the injury factor. We've already seen Youk have to be out with back spasms and an elbow that got plunked. Mikey did a killer job at first. That's why this is just a freakin' rotten situation. If something happened to the corner infielders, we've got a hell of a replacement. On the other hand, you can't rot a guy like Mikey on the bench on the off chance a starter's goes down. That's why I expect better from Tito.
My fear is that Theo, seeing the state of his bullpen, will overreach and trade Mikey Lowell for a pitcher who may not be around next season. I like Mikey's character, his experience, and clutch hitting. I would feel much better with him on the roster and, if we're fortunate, on the playoff roster in September.
If we could only pickett outside of Fenway and force Theo to listen to us!! This is a big concern. We do need bullpen help badly and it's obvious (for some twisted personal reason) that Theo doesn't want Mikey on this team. If management was a little better at handling players, the situation might be liveable for everyone (fans included).
