His performance so far begs the question: why did Theo agree to pay so much money for this guy? Other than a couple of good outings, he has been a mediocre pitcher not worth the $15-16M 'Sox are paying. You expect a guy making that kind of money to come out, throw strikes, and shut down the opposition.
I sure hope he proves to be stronger in the 2nd half of this season.
Of course, if he settles down and the 'Sox rally, I'll a little better until he struggles, which may be inevitably soon.

Well another lackluster performance from Lackey. The only difference is that the offense picked him up on Tuesday night. I've not been impressed by this guy at all this season, and I'm trying to figure out why he hasn't lived up to expectations. AL East is a tough division, but Lackey can't blame his mediocre pitching on switching divisions. I think perhaps he had a few good seasons and rode the wave of adrenaline into the post-season. I hate to think that Lackey's best is behind him, but we've not seen anything thus far this season to suggest otherwise. John Farrell needs to work with Lackey more. I think there are mechanical issues here.
ReplyDeleteGreat showing from Vic on Tuesday night. I would say that his foot is much improved. It's obvious why the Sox wanted him-offensively, when he's on, he's a killer. And kudos to Beltre. I think he's getting more comfortable at Fenway and he's finding more of a grove. I think early on, he worried too much about the position he was in and the reaction in Boston to him replacing Mikey (and rightly so). Now, he's producing and looking more at ease defensively. I will cheer him on whole-heartedly because he's a Sox and he's doing a damn fine job, but emotionally, I just can't get behind the man who took Mikey's job.
An interesting story appeared on NESN.com yesterday about Ells having to defend himself against criticism from the fans for his going back on the DL. Several fans (myself included) set the record straight to NESN. Tony "the Instigator" Massarotti published a story in the Globe last week in which he suggested that agent Bor-ass is filling Jacoby's head with visions of multi-million dollar contracts and enticing him not to play. The column was so off kilter that fans commented (myself included) that Mazz must have been smokin' something when he penned that column. We all know Bor-ass is a slime ball, but to suggest that Ells doesn't want to play is a tall tale indeed! I think Ells read that piece and probably fielded questions from reporters on it and believed the hoopla originated from the fans. Yesterday, the gaggle of fans set NESN.com straight on the jerk responsible to causing a stir in the Ellsbury camp. It's positively mind boggling how these reporters, who know these ball players better than the fans, can write such garbage and give the impression that they don't know these guys at all. Mazz, you're an idiot!
If I could find another publication that updates Boston sports news more frequently, I would switch in a heart beat.
ReplyDeleteI recall the days when Mazz was with the Boston Herald. His reporting then seemed more upbeat and evenhanded. My theory is that he has been around Ryan and O'Shaugnessy too much and the dismal state of the newspaper industry has caused these sportswriters to engage in sensationalism as opposed to reporting the news.
Tonight, one of the Boston writers was stirring up stuff about Tom Brady's contract situation being at a standstill.
I have been a N.E. Patriot fan since the days of Grogan, Sam "the Bam" Cunningham, and Stanley Morgan, Mike Haynes, Andy Johnson, John Hannah, and many others. I was simply elated when the Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2002, and two more times afterwards were a bonus.
I attribute that run to good ownership, good drafting, and good coaching. Yet, the Globe, particularly Ryan, is always bashing Belicheck these days. Yes, they lost the Super Bowl in the last minute (which put me in a funk for days) but they are only the 2nd team in NFL history to go undefeated in the regular season. They had a great season. They have a great franchise.
Why can't these guys enjoy this? It sure is a far cry from Sullivan Stadium and the team known for perenially having the number 1 pick in the draft.
