Boston Red Sox - Pick your most beloved Red Sox left fielder - Boston Dirt Dogs - Boston.com

I voted for Yaz. His '67 September performance was immortal in my mind. He batted over .500 in September '67 and practically carried the team on his shoulder having just lost Tony C to that terrible beaning. 1. I'm surprised Manny's name is up there. I don't know if I'd give him props for fab defensive ability. In these polls, it's not about the defense, however. It's about the hitting ability of the guy who happens to play the position in question. I found that out early on when the MLB Network did their top 10 3rd basemen of all time. Not only was the list riddled with a bunch of dead guys, but defensive prowess at the position was an afterthought. Does fielding percentage matter to anyone anymore? This irrational thought of mine seems to invoke the ire of the baseball community who shout at the top of their lungs, "little girl, you don't know what you're talking about!!" Oh really?

If I had to chose a left fielder, I'd probably pick Yaz too, with Jim Rice a close second.

  2. Sadly, defense does not draw the attention from erstwhile times. It used to be a that a SS like Mark Belanger with the O's could start despite hitting close to the Mendoza line. But, he was, like Brooks Robinson, a human vaccumm cleaner.
