They both have struggled all season. They both are hitting around .200. However, tonight both Craw-fish and Salty came through big.
Craw-fish drew a 2-out walk and scored on Salty's "Wall Ball" 2-bagger. Craw-fish was off at the crack of the bat and never hesitated. He scored easily from first -- the game's only run. Nice to have that kind of speed on the basepaths. BB is just as good as a single in my book.
Uncharacteristically, Leyland erred by keeping in his lefty to face Salty.
I feel very happy for the both of them -- Salty and Crawfish. This could help with their self-confidence.
Another solid outing from Buchholz who continuing to be able to work out of trouble.

I can tell you from my own personal experience of sitting out in putrid conditions, no one wanted to be playing in the mist, wind, and then the downpour that was Wednesday night's game. That crazy lefty Tiger pitcher was so eager to get the hell off the mound that he handed Leyland the ball and started to walk off! I don't blame you, man!
ReplyDeleteI think our boy Crawfish has passed the uncertainty stage and had regressed backwards. He swings at some ridiculous pitches. It's one thing to be nervous and feeling the pressure of a big contract. It's another to completely lose the baseball smarts that got you to the bigs in the first place. I saw Carl take some really ugly swings at bad pitches. It's like he doesn't know what to do anymore. He's lucky he walked because if he'd swung at one more bad pitch, he was going back to the dugout. We know you're scared, Carl, but you're not helping your cause by making dumb decisions. Swinging and missing at good pitches is one thing--it happens to every hitter. Swinging at crap thrown your way is not the way to get your confidence back.
Salty has been hitting better lately, but his real value is in the games he calls. So far, everyone but Beckett is ok with throwing to him. (Dice-K no longer factors into the current equation since he's on the DL.) Confidence in calling games is where this guy's going to make his mark.
