Tough way to lose

When it comes to losing games, I would prefer getting blown out rather than losing late in the game.  Such was the case last night.  Tough loss.

I am beginning to believe that Tito is overworking Bard.  He is a power pitcher who throws in the high 90's.

  1. If I had to lose, and that's a big IF, I'd rather go down in late innings like this than get blown away throughout the game. There's something morally deflating about being on the receiving end of a good beating. But if you're only down by 1 run and just can't make it happen in late innings, you take your lumps. Only one run. You start to question your abilities after getting hacked big time.

The problem with Rubber Arm Bard is the same issue we had last season: no reliable relievers. Theo does not have an eye for pitchers. We thought our woes were over with the signing of guys like Jenks and Wheeler (I never thought Albers was a good catch.) But these folks have been anything but reliable. Tito has no choice but to go to Old Faithful to get the job done. If they don't get some QUALITY relivers, Bard will be ruined sooner rather than later.

  2. Another way to look at it: a blowout can be chalked up to a bad day at the office. Losing a close game in late innings can erode confidence that a team cannot win the close ones. Perhaps I have been shell-shocked from seeing the 'Sox blow huge leads at Fenway over the years. As a kid, I saw them blow an 8-run lead going into the 8th inning.
