Ooooo...I love this. Which firearm do you brandish, and when?? (Note: I'm not giving props to the NRA here.) I think there's no question who's the #1 starter. Without a doubt it's Lester. Buch is the obvious choice for the #2 spot, but then it become dicey (not Dice-K!) Based on last season's performances, Beckett, Lackey and Dice-K are all on equal footing. I think I'd go Lackey, Beckett and then Dice-K. The beauty of this group is that, again, if they're effective, it won't matter who pitches when. They'll thrash the opposition every time out. This could be a wicked rotation if every starter shows up every outing.
Now, for the Brothers-in-Arms. The closer slot has a lot more flexibility than it did last season. Bard can definitely do it if need be, as can Jenks. (Side-bar: We have to come up with a suitable nickname for Jenks. If he's wild, my thinking is he'll be labeled "High Jinx!") Anywho, we'll split the set-up role between Bard & Jenks, but don't forget about the Freight Train. Atchison, whom I still love by the way, proved his versatility last season. Yes, he needs to be a bit more effective, but in a pinch, he can deliver some quality innings in just about any role. With he and Poppa Wheeler (ok, we'll work on this one too!) for middle innings (and begrudgingly Okie), we're set.
I'm not too worried about a LHP at this point. Wake has totally accepted his role out of the pen this year and is psyched to provide long relief...well, perhaps he's not that psyched. I do hope that Salty can handle the knucklah.
Let us reflect on the gospel according to Curt Schilling: The rotation with the lowest ERA wins the World Series. So true.
