It is starting already with J.D.

Read reports that he is nursing a hamstring injury already and mulling over retirement.

  1. Can you believe this guy?? The Globe reports two items of interest: 1. He's made over $100 million in his career; 2. Tito's not likely to start him in next Saturday's split between Northeastern and BC.

On the money part: that's just disgusting. Drew is a smart baseball guy, but he's been plagued by an inability to stay healthy. If he was an office worker, he'd constantly be calling in sick. The hamstring thing is serious because he had all winter to nurse himself back to health. When did this thing crop up? He's been at the Fort for like 2 days!!

This man is Theo's pet. I've heard Boy Wonder gush in interviews that Drew is the kind of guy you build a team around because one way or another, he gets on base. There's no question that JD has baseball ability. He wouldn't be there otherwise, but one cannot overlook the fact that he doesn't have the physical constitution for this grind. AND, if you recall last season, he got off to a horrible start. Everyone was busting on the fact that the two lefties, Papi and Drew, were flops at the plate. Drew's only saving grace was that he contributed defensively so he was forgiven a lot more quickly than Ortiz was.

This is Drew's last contract season with the Sox. Unless he has some bang-up year and plays EVERY time he's scheduled to be in the lineup, I can't see him coming back to Boston in 2012. I will say one thing about Drew that is an absolute asset to the Sox. He goes about his business with a quiet resolve. He's not a big time star and he doesn't handle himself as such. I think he's good with the media and he doesn't let his emotions get the better of him, although the fans would like to see more of his enthusiasm on the field. But hey, the guy was the 2008 All Star MVP. He's a good player, but certainly his age and his physical abilities will be scrutinized this season.
