It was great to see our beloved 'Sox catapult over the Blue Jays, gain ground on the Rays, begin causing the Yankees to look over their shoulders, and win all 3 in Trop Field. We are seeing both hitting and great pitching, particularly from Lester.
Mazz in the Globe wrote the other day what "southpaw" declared a few days earlier: Jon Lester is new ace and bona fide stopper.
Okay performance last night from Lackey. He seems to issue his share of BBs. Will have to look at his career stats to see if control has been an issue for him. Career-wise, he averages just under 3 BB/per game. To me, that is a bit high. Also, in looking at this career stats, maybe it's just me but they are not that impressive. Perhaps his historical success against the 'Sox prompted the signing.

Ortiz's swing has accelerated dramatically, particularly his wrists; I'm sure I'm not the only one with suspicions about how. Nature doesn't normally return bat-speed to a player in his mid-30s. My standards in the post-steroid era have sunk to the point that I am willing to embrace a don't-ask/don't-tell policy.
ReplyDeleteI love Broom Day! Not only did this broom sweep, but it beat the living daylights out of the supposedly unbeatable Rays. Reality check and then some!!
ReplyDeleteI was pleasantly surprised by one Mr. Lackey. I think it took him a while to find his groove in the game, but one he hit it, he did alright. I was concerned about his extended discussion with Tek after Tek got crossed up by a pitch. I wouldn't argue with the Computer, Mr. Lackey. You just worry about hitting your target. The IBM with Legs calls a good game. I still would like to see "Lights Out Lackey," but perhaps this is the best we can expect from him. He is a gamer, though. He wants the ball every time.
Shar1836, I have been wondering about Big Papi's comeback myself. Where is it suddenly coming from? It's not that I mind it being there (with the exception of the Mike Lowell situation, that is). In an era when everything is so closely scrutinized, I'd be pretty careful about thinking it's possible to sail under the radar, however.
Finally, one last thought about the sweep. For all the euphoria I was sad everytime the camera panned the Red Sox dugout and landed on a benched Mikey Lowell. This situation has got to be maddening for him. After being a big contributor the past several seasons, and to now be relegated to just watching the game has to suck. With Ortiz's sudden resurgence, who knows when Mikey will get at-bats. To me, this defeats the whole purpose of having a bench. You cannot sit bench players for extended periods of time and then call on them in clutch sitations and expect them to deliver. It's not realistic. If a starter goes down, it's going to take the bench a while to get their timing down and to really help out offensively. I don't know what the solution is for Mikey other than the organization just outright releasing him. They would be foolish to do this, however. What's to stop a contender from picking Mikey up and it coming back to haunt the Sox? The Front Office better figure out what to do here.
Oh my goodness, do you all think that Papi's revitalized swing is the result of supplements or PAD (performance enhancing drugs)?
ReplyDeleteCORRECTION: PED = performance enhancement drug
