'Sox need consistency from Lackey

He was the marquee free agent signing in the offseason.  His addition labeled the 'Sox as having one of the best starting rotations in history.  Like the rest of the 'Sox, Lackey needs consistency.

  1. His comment in the Boston Globe this morning went something like "I threw better than the line showed." Seriously, John Lackey, are you kidding yourself or us?? When Lackey pitched against us for the Angels I used to think, "uh-oh. Our guys better bring it because this guy sure can." Now, I'm thinking, "is this really the same pitcher?" I have not seen anything stellar in his outings so far this season. Consistency indeed!!

And, another thing. Basic fundamentals are a huge part of this game. The stupid drills they make you do in Spring Training, drills like covering the bag at first, seem moronic at the time because these big league pitchers have been playing their whole lives. They know about covering the bag. Well twice during yesterday's game, Lackey did not hustle to cover the bag at first, allowing a runner on when the batter should have been out. The first time, Lackey missed the bag entirely with his foot. The second time was just plain not hustling fast enough to get there before the runner. Little mistakes like these can turn into big ones. Perhaps John Ferrell should spend less time on mechanics and more time on fundamentals!!!

P.S. Dutin Pedroia has job security.

  2. I recently attended a Double A game. 3 times during that game, the pitcher either did not hustle over or were not on the bag. Seems to be that they should work on that drill during pre-game warms-ups (assuming they don't).

Speaking of fundamentals: bunting is a lost art...!!!
