Good performance by Wake

As in many of his starts and typical of a knuckleballer, Wake had one bad inning.  He gave the starting rotation and the bullpen a life with his outing today.  I remember in 2004 when he gave up a start to pitch in game 3 against the Yankees, took a shelling, but breathed life into the bullpen.  Wake is that kind of guy.  He won't always like his role, but he accepts it.

  1. Wake occupies the same role as Varitek, Lowell and Ortiz: a movable part. Sometimes the movable parts are more important than the starters because they recognize key situations and can make adjustments better than the everyday guys.

It will be interesting to see how the rotation shakes out the rest of this season. Why can't we go to a 6-man rotation? When you have 6 capable starters, they should be utilized to the max. One guy should not be sent to pen duty, especially if he's pitching well.

  2. I like the idea of a 6-man rotation to keep the starters fresh. Casey Kelly bears watching though. He is their top pitching prospect in the minors. He could help either after the All-Star break or after the rosters are expanded in September.
