Despite the slow start...
'Sox are 2 games over .500 and 8 GB. The AL east has a logjam of 4 teams vying for the top. I have to believe that the other 3 teams will hit a slump somewhere along the line. 'Sox are certainly not out of it at this point despite the dire warnings of the Boston Press corps.

Catching the Rays may likely take the power of the gods of baseball. As much as I hate to admit it, (and I can't emphasize the loathing enough), the Rays are good. They are the team to beat this year. If the Sox really get cranked, they should have no problems overtaking the Jays. I find it hard to believe Toronto's a better team than Boston. I don't know where they rank in AL in fielding percentage, but their last series with the Sox was positively ugly in terms of defense. The Yankees may hit the skids with all their old geezers. Posada's down already with a foot injury; punk Swisher has something wrong with his arm; and closer god Mo's advanced age may be catching up to him. Young gun Granderson has been on the DL awhile as well. I think post-All Star break, the Yankees will be banged up.
ReplyDeleteIf the Sox can put together a string of wins, I think there's a huge possibility we'll pass the Jays and battle with the Yankees for the Wild Card spot. As much as I'd like to see Joe Maddon's Rays implode, I don't think that's a likely scenario.
Sox starting pitching can only get better. The offense, however, will probably decrease a little bit (they won't stay 2nd in league in runs and homeruns all season). Overall, it looks like a team that will win 89-93 games. I don't think it'll be enough this year for a wildcard.
ReplyDeleteI recently read where Yankee DH Nick Johnson is or has had wrist surgery. This guy is a patient hitter and has got to be the most history prone players I have seen.
ReplyDeleteI shudder to think where Tampa Bay would be if they still had LHP Kazmir who typically shut down our 'Sox.
Nick Johnson CANNOT stay healthy! Reports say that because of his recent wrist surgery, he will not even be able to pick up a bat until late June at the earliest.
