I have seen him pitch on TV a few times. Each time, he seemed pretty effective. He is a good athlete and fields his position well. He seemed durable. I had become a fan of Achison. I could not understand why he was shipped back and forth between Boston and Pawtuckett.
Then, I pulled his statistics for the past two seasons. In 2010, he gave up 9 gopher balls and seemed to have control problems. 2011 was better. He could have a role for the 'Sox over the long season.

In Choo-choo Charlie's defense, this guy was mismanaged by Francona. He was a viable option for the Sox out of the pen, but every time he was called on he warmed up and then never came in! That's called a dry hump and Scott Atchison's the king of the dry hump. I'd probably not pitch very well either if all I'd done was warm up in the pen and take the mound occassionally. Had he been used with a little more effectiveness, his numbers wouldn't look quite so bad.
ReplyDeleteHe pitched in Japan for a long time, which is probably appealing to Bobby V since he also has logged some miles in Japan. Scott's an older guy (early 30s) and he's got a family. Being a career minor leaguer's got to be a haul. If he can pitch well, he's a pretty good option for us. I'd say he's a better option than the motley crew of relievers we've got now.
