'Sox to pay $59M to nine players on the DL -- yikes!

Can we say mis-management?  Some of Theo's gifts keep on taking.

DETROIT -- The Red Sox submitted their 25-man Opening Day roster by Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline, placing three players -- closer Andrew Bailey (thumb), reliever Chris Carpenter (elbow) and Ryan Kalish (neck, shoulder) -- on the 60-day disabled list.

By doing so, the Sox opened room on the 40-man major league roster for three nonroster pitchers: Scott Atchison, Vicente Padilla and Justin Thomas, all of whom will be on the 25-man roster in Detroit.

Four players were also placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to March 26: reliever Rich Hill, pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, pitcher Andrew Miller, and outfielder Carl Crawford.

Two players, reliever Bobby Jenks and pitcher John Lackey, were already on the 60-day DL. The nine players on the DL are being paid $59.27 million this season.
