The starting rotation certainly has durability issues. With Lackey and Dice-K out this season (perhaps the latter makes a late season appearance), 'Sox need a number 4 and 5 starter. Bard could fill one of those slots.

I have serious issues with the so-called rotation. Three pitchers in Beckett, Lester and Buchholz hardly constitute a rotation. I'm totally against Bard becoming a starter. It's not only a mental thing but it's a physical thing. He's been overworked the past couple of season out of the pen and now he's going to be asked to go from maybe 20 pitches to around 100! If his arm doesn't fall off this season, I'll be really surprised.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the harm in getting a low-cost starter? I think they blew it in not getting Edwin Jackson. Dice-K might pitch later on in the year, but there are no guarantees. I honestly don't think Andrew Miller is quality. I was just not overwhelmed by his stuff last season. Making Aceves a starter is not an option either. We all saw how valuable he was out of the pen last season.
The pitching is the big question right now. I just hope things fall into place because it will be too hard to make up games at the trade deadline in July.
