Lots of uncertainty -- Part 1 -- injuries

Jenks - surgery - won't be ready for opening day (set up man)
Crawford - surgery - won't be ready for opening day (2011 bust)
Kalish - surgery - won't be ready for opening day (heir apparent to RF)

Season has not started and the injury list also contains key players.

Tomorrow: who's gone since last fall's "Great Collapse".

  1. Wow! Ok, where to start? First, let's put the "collapse heard 'round the world" behind us. We can't change it, so why dwell on it. Second, and I hate to say it, in terms of a GM we went from a jackass to a dumbass. I don't think the Front Office has any idea what they're doing. Let's begin with the rotation.

So far, we're guaranteed to have Beckett, Lester and Buchholz in some order of 1, 2, 3. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess. Taking Bard out of the pen when we've lost our bona fide closer is a huge mistake. Yes, we've got Andrew Bailey. He's had arm issues in the past so what happens if he's really not over those ailments, can't pitch and Bard's a starter? Do we turn to Alfredo "Willsaveus?" Possibly. I can't emphasize enough NOT to rely on Bobby Jenks! His latest round of surgery as noted above is just another indication that he's not the guy for us. If I was GM, I'd send Bard back out to the pen, sign Wake to a 1-year, $1 million deal with the stipulation he's out in the pen, and JUMP, no LEAP, and sign Edwin Jackson to a 2-year deal. Great arm and we need the help. Next year when Lackey comes back we'd have Beckett, Buchholz, Lester, Lackey, Jackson. That's a pretty fiersome rotation. That would make it Bard, Bailey, "Willsaveus," Melancon, Wake, and Albers for relief. Get rid of Jenks!

I like Ryan Sweeney for right. Nice kid with a great personality for Boston. If his on-field performance matches his personality, he's going to do just fine for the Sox.

Crawford is a huge concern as is Kalish. Kalish a little less so because he will be back without question. With Crawford's dismal 2011 season, this latest setback is another nail in the coffin. If he can't start in April, who plays left? Mike Aviles? Reddick's gone. I hope they don't make the bone-headed move and put Ellsbury in left. We all know how that experiement worked!!
